Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay learned to love art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. When she was studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. From this position she started her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
